Seating in Texas Holdem Poker
Texas Holdem has become a popular form of poker because players can increase their odds of winning if they understand the strategy of the game. A successful strategy knows that where a player sits in relation to the dealer should influence how aggressively the player should bid. To understand this it is necessary to review some of the rules of the game. It is easiest to follow along when using chip sets like those used in tournaments.
The game is usually played with forced bets called the small blind and the big blind. The small blind is made by the player immediately to the left of the dealer. The big blind is made by the player to the left of the small blind, and is twice the amount of the small blind. During the game the small blind and big blind are each marked by clay chip.
A dealer chip is placed in front of the player in the dealer position, and this dealer button passes to the left after each hand. This changes the position of the dealer and blinds relative to all of the players. A dealer button is included in any Texas Holdem poker chip set.
Using a player’s position relative to the dealer is an important part of a successful strategy. Players who sit to the right of the dealer can observe the other players placing their bets and make an informed guess about the value of their hole cards. These players will have some idea of their chances of winning before they bet a single chip.
On the other side players to the left of the dealer know less than the players to the right when betting. Therefore the best strategy is for players to the left to play fewer hands. Even if one of these players has good hole cards they may want to hold on to most of their Las Vegas chips until after the first round of betting.
This strategy works best in no-limit tournaments. In limit tournaments the raises and bets are limited to the amount of the big blind, or to twice the amount of the big blind. Because fewer poker chips are at stake in any one hand a player’s position relative to the dealer is less important in limit games.
In no-limit tournaments the importance of each player’s position relative to the dealer becomes more important. Pay attention to which player has the dealer chip from the clay chip set in front of him. A winning strategy takes advantage of a player’s seat by betting their casino chips more aggressively when to the dealer’s right.
