Bankroll Management at the Poker Tables

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Bankroll management is often an overlooked skill. I found poker wasn’t fun when I got “in over my head” and saw my chip stack disappear. I stepped back and started playing for fun or for pocket change and the results improved my game and my psyche. I guess it didn’t help either that I had lost all of my money so I was forced to move down! They say hindsight is 20/20!

I did some research on what other people use for guidelines to manage their poker funds. What I’ve found is that in general having 50 buy ins for a tournament and 100 big blinds for a cash game, and be able to afford to lose it, are good rules of thumb. Now that I focus on this area I find that it’s no longer part of the equation. It’s now a given to myself when I sit in a game that it’s one I can afford, the only time I’m thinking about the money involved is when I am counting my clay chips at the cashiers cage!

Cheating in Poker – An Unfair Advantage

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Cheating at anything in life is often viewed as a mechanism to get ahead when you are at a disadvantage, and can also be used for extra “just in case” padding when you have the clear advantage. There are obvious risks and rewards associated with cheating, particularly if done at the game of poker. At the poker tables, it can be difficult to cheat individually unless you somehow “mark” particular cards in the deck for future identification or manage to sneak a look at your opponents’ cards, which is fairly unlikely.

Cheating in poker can occur on an organized basis using a system of distractions. Players will often play with the texas holdem chip stack in front of them as a means to distract you from thinking about your move. The dangerous part of poker at the tables comes when two players are in collusion and intentionally cheating as a team.

In order to protect yourself from this, especially if you suspect something is “fishy”, you can either walk away from the table or play conservative to observe how the cheating is occurring. By chip betting in small amounts over a shorter period of time you limit your exposure to the cheaters at the table, and you should only make aggressive bets when your cards are very good.

The collection of chips in poker

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

One has to stay focused while playing a poker game. Whether you’re at single poker table or whether you’re in a full tournament, being alert keeps you in the game. And if it’s a game to be played with a poker chip or an entire chip set collection, concentration and alertness is important.

Analyze what you are doing. Just do not follow the crowd blindly. If the opponent’s an expert at handling chips then he can surely dump you by distracting you mentally while handling those casino chips. If you previously played badly don’t show the dismay on your face.

You have to attain the highest number of chips. That is, you have to acquire the chip lead in the game. May it be clay chip or the Texas Hold’em chip. You have to be the player with the highest number of chips. This will determine your position in the game. Your victory depends on how well you play the game and the collection that you have made as far as your chips are concerned. The higher the number the better chances you have. But make sure that you concentrate on each and every step in the game and play wisely.
