Poker strategies to improve playing with poker chip sets

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Poker is a game of gambling most commonly played in casinos and involves huge betting. Betting with your poker chip sets and winning the pot requires you to learn the game rules and acquire certain skills. The poker is based on guessing and mainly depends on the game your opponents are playing. You decide whether you have to fold, raise or call according to the hands your opponents may have which are assumed by you based on how they bet and the expressions they have on their face while playing. You can guess their hands by observing their body language and their way of betting and make your moves accordingly.

You need to be very careful while betting with your poker chip set and always play within your limit. If you are not an experienced player and are not familiar with bluffing then staking high with low hands is not at all recommended. While betting keep an expression that would not provide any information of the hand you posses and confuse your opponents making them believe that you are having a good hand. Your expression should be very passive while playing poker as it would not provide a single clue of your hands and hence be totally unaware of your hand.

Bankroll Management at the Poker Tables

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Bankroll management is often an overlooked skill. I found poker wasn’t fun when I got “in over my head” and saw my chip stack disappear. I stepped back and started playing for fun or for pocket change and the results improved my game and my psyche. I guess it didn’t help either that I had lost all of my money so I was forced to move down! They say hindsight is 20/20!

I did some research on what other people use for guidelines to manage their poker funds. What I’ve found is that in general having 50 buy ins for a tournament and 100 big blinds for a cash game, and be able to afford to lose it, are good rules of thumb. Now that I focus on this area I find that it’s no longer part of the equation. It’s now a given to myself when I sit in a game that it’s one I can afford, the only time I’m thinking about the money involved is when I am counting my clay chips at the cashiers cage!

Poker - Preparation methods for cash games

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Texas holdem poker games in which each clay poker chip represents instant cash value are a different animal. I find that these are much more difficult to prepare for because there is no set changing format going in. Also, there is no beginning and end. One can usually pick up their poker chips at any time and exit the game. I personally have found sometimes in these situations preparation can be even detrimental. Players come and go from the table.

Why specific preparation can be detrimental is that the mood of the game can sharply change at any time. For example, you’ve been preparing for a cash game with the intention of taking off the gloves and playing aggressive cards at the poker table for the evening. You have your world tour poker chips stacked nicely. You bring two buy in’s for the game and in the first hand you have a huge bad beat for your entire first buy in. Now you are in a position where if you lose your stack again you are done for the night. You’ve spent so much time preparing to take risks that your game prep now does not match the context of the game you are in.

Heads up at the poker tables

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Solid techniques will be useful in heads up No Limit Texas hold em poker games. In general, skill and observational techniques will have more implication as the number of opponents you are against goes down. Don’t fall into a trap of thinking that since there is only one opponent you can pay less attention to get the poker chips! This is a faulty point of view to fall into. A better point of view to adopt is that since you are against one opponent instead of a full table of eight opponents, there is actually now opportunity to try to gain eight times more info!!

Well, this could be unrealistic due to there may literally not be that much info. But the theory of gaining more information is relevant. Against one player it should even be an exercise to make sure you are looking for something to use as a reference point on every single hand. Things like paying attention to your opponent’s reactions to flops compound in importance. If you can get that one player figured out the effects to their clay chip stack will be devastating.

The basics of Texas Hold Em’

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

The first thing you should know before heading to the poker tables and laying down a bunch of poker chips are the different “hands”. Cards are divided into four different suites (Hears, Diamonds, Clubs, and Spades) of 13 cards each. Some hands are stronger than others. A set of straight of 9,10, J,Q,K is beaten by 5 cards of the same suite in a flush.

In Texas Holdem you are dealt two cards and three cards are laid out on the table, these are the “board”. There are normally two blinds, small and big, that move from place to place. This is to keep the game moving. A player has to pay the blind to get cards that round. After the first round of betting finishes the dealer will put another card out, betting will start again and then the dealer will flip the fifth and final card, the “river”.

Betting continues as normal except that at the end you compare hands if there is more than one person left. Your hand in Texas Holdem is comprised of any 5 cards from the 5 on the board and the two in your hand. After this is resolved and every last Texas holdem chip in the pot is transferred. The blinds then shift over one and the next hand begins.

Body language in a poker game

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Poker is one of the most popular gambling games in the world. In this game, to win, many things such as experience, patience, common sense and the study of human psychology are a must. The body language of a player can win or cost him the game. The term “poker-face” thus originated since the facial expression gives the loads information to the other players about the type of hand a player might have. Hence a player who has an almost expressionless face is termed as a “poker-face”.

A player should be vigilant in observing others’ body language even the slightest changes at the table convey a certain amount of information. A player should always be observing the amount of poker chips in the pot and should also pay attention to the players who toy with their stack.

If a player is attentive, he can easily get to decipher his opponent’s mental make up on how they handle their Texas holdem chips. Closely watching the other players putting down their chips, while betting or folding the amount or quantum of the bets, also helps in getting inkling about the player’s hand. The eyes are another huge source of information, the involuntary expression of the eyes as soon as a player picks up his hand is priceless and a very crucial observation.

A player must be aware that other players may be giving off false body signs. It always takes some time to become an expert in understanding the body language of other players. If a beginner is excellent in understanding the body movements of his opponents, he can make remarkable entry even in Texas Hold’em poker.

Managing Your Chip Stack During a Poker game

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

When playing any poker game, it is important to pace yourself during the game. A good measure of how well you are doing in the game is to manage your poker chips. While you cannot pass up certain opportunities in a poker game, it is crucial to keep an eye on the amount of poker chips you have so you can determine how much or how little you have compared to opponent players. By monitoring your chip stack relative to other players, you can adjust your game playing accordingly and vary the number of chances than you would take.

Though some players consider it is bad luck to count your chips while you are in the middle of the game, it is still important to have a general idea of where you stand compared to others. A low chip count may mean more conservative playing while a larger chip stack may allow you to take more risks in trying to acquire others’ chips. Every single player has their own style of play, but keeping a constant watch over your clay chip count can help you adjust your style of play to make the best decisions.
