The basics of Texas Hold Em’

The first thing you should know before heading to the poker tables and laying down a bunch of poker chips are the different “hands”. Cards are divided into four different suites (Hears, Diamonds, Clubs, and Spades) of 13 cards each. Some hands are stronger than others. A set of straight of 9,10, J,Q,K is beaten by 5 cards of the same suite in a flush.

In Texas Holdem you are dealt two cards and three cards are laid out on the table, these are the “board”. There are normally two blinds, small and big, that move from place to place. This is to keep the game moving. A player has to pay the blind to get cards that round. After the first round of betting finishes the dealer will put another card out, betting will start again and then the dealer will flip the fifth and final card, the “river”.

Betting continues as normal except that at the end you compare hands if there is more than one person left. Your hand in Texas Holdem is comprised of any 5 cards from the 5 on the board and the two in your hand. After this is resolved and every last Texas holdem chip in the pot is transferred. The blinds then shift over one and the next hand begins.
